The treatment with pomegranate supplements can improve the quality of life in menopausal women.
Menopause is the time that marks the end of menstrual cycles and is diagnosed after the first one-year menstrual cycle cessation. Although menopause is a natural biological process, many women experience physical symptoms, such as hot flashes, and emotional symptoms, which can disrupt sleep, decrease energy or affect emotional health. Herbal therapy is the most common natural treatment to regulate hormonal imbalance for menopausal symptoms. In traditional Persian medicine, pomegranate has been used as a remedy to treat hormonal imbalances.
Very recently, Mohammad Sadegh and co-workers at the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Iran, have investigated the effect of a pomegranate supplement on menopausal symptoms and the quality of life in peri-menopausal women. For preparing the pomegranate supplement, pure pomegranate juice was simmered to be concentrated. No sugar, water, or additives were added. Their study demonstrated that four weeks’ treatment with the pomegranate supplement improved menopausal symptoms including sweating hot flashes, insomnia, melancholia, nervousness, fatigue, vertigo, headache, sexual complaints, and urinary tract infections, and therefore, enhanced the quality of life in menopausal women in comparison with women taking the placebo. The results also showed that pomegranate had constant long-term effects after three weeks of discontinuing treatment.
